Wright comments on Elneny's performance for Arsenal against Barcelona

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright calls for Mohamed Elneny to play more games for the Gunners after his performance against Barcelona.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has suggested on BT Sport that midfielder Mohamed Elneny should be featuring more regularly for the Gunners after he impressed in the second leg of the Champions League last-of-16 tie against Barcelona.

Arsenal fell to a 3-1 defeat at Camp Nou as Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi completed a 5-1 triumph on aggregate, but Elneny capped a fine individual display with a 20-yard strike into the roof of the net.

The Egyptian international was signed from Basel during the January transfer window, but he has been restricted to just two games in the Premier League by Arsene Wenger, with the majority of his appearances coming in the FA Cup.

After his showing against several of the best players in the world, Wright has questioned why the 23-year-old has not played more games for the North Londoners given their recent slump in form.

Wright said: "I liked Elneny because he was closing down all day. He played very well, his link-up play was very, very good. When he eventually got the chance, he was very calm and guided it into the top corner.

"I'm delighted to see him playing because we signed him in January and he didn't get to play. He weren't playing in game and I was thinking what was the point? Just get him on the pitch. He can obviously get a goal too."

Elneny wasn't known for finding the back of the net in Swiss football, with just seven goals coming in 121 outings, but he offered energy and movement in the centre of the park, something Arsenal have arguably been lacking in recent weeks.

He will hope to feature again when Arsenal travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Saturday.
