Why Everton should plot ambitious move for Argentine international Ever Banega

Everton are in need of a new holding midfielder this summer.

Following the recent majority share takeover by Iranian business Farhad Moshiri, nobody can blame Everton supporters for getting a little excited at the prospect of heavy investment in the first-team.

The Toffees are widely regarded as one of the most established clubs in England, yet breaking in to the top four was always going to be a difficult task without big money spent on improving the playing squad.

Now that investment is available, boss Roberto Martinez shouldn’t hold back in seeking top quality players and one position in particular which undoubtedly needs improving is in central midfield.

James McCarthy is a solid player while Gareth Barry has been one of the most reliable defensive midfielders in recent Premier League history, yet time isn’t on the former England international’s side.

At 35, Barry is very much in the twilight of his career and Everton should seek a major signing as his replacement this summer, with Sevilla’s Ever Banega a wonderful proposition.

The Argentine international has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, and while he has opted to stay in Spain thus far, speculation is mounting over his future with his contract drawing to a close.

“We’ll try to renew Banega’s contract, but if he leaves we’ll sign another player, then another and another,” Sevilla’s president Jose Castro told Mundo Deportivo in a recent interview.

Banega’s deal at Sevilla expires in 2017, yet the La Liga club would prefer to sell him this summer rather than lose him for free 12 months later, giving Everton an opportunity to strike a bargain.

The former Boca Juniors man is tenacious in the tackle, superb at reading the game and among the most highly-rated midfielders in world football. And at 27, he’s arguably entering his prime years.

Everton may feel he is arguably too big of a name to join the Merseyside club, yet money talks and the Toffees, similarly to West Ham United with Dimitri Payet, now have the resources to attract such players.

It’s ambitious, but signing Banega could be the start of something big for Everton and it’s within their reach.
