Don Hutchinson makes claim over quality of Sunderland and Newcastle squads

Newcastle United host Sunderland this weekend.

Former player Don Hutchinson has suggested on Twitter that the Sunderland team under Peter Reid would beat both Newcastle United and the Black Cats of today nine times out of ten.

The North east duo are set to face this weekend at St. James’ Park in arguably the biggest game between the two in recent Premier League history, with both team’s league status on the line.

Sunderland currently sit in 17th spot on 25 points, whereas Newcastle are 19th with one point less.

It has been a season to forget for both sides, and Hutchison has lamented the quality on show in the North East by claiming Sunderland’s team under Peter Reid would regularly beat them both.

Peter Reid was in charge at the Stadium of Light between 1995-2002, helping the club earn promotion to the Premier League and later challenging for the European spots with Kevin Phillips their leading scorer.

Those highs are a far cry from the struggles at the Stadium of Light today, with the Wearside club deep in the relegation mix and facing Newcastle this weekend in what can only be described as a key six-pointer.

The encounter takes on an intriguing angle following the appointment of Rafa Benitez, though even a manager of his pedigree may find the Magpies too fragile and error-prone to keep up.

Sunderland won the corresponding fixture 3-0 earlier in the campaign, and they will head to St. James’ Park looking to record their seventh straight victory over their rivals.
