Tony Cottee backs West Ham’s Dimitri Payet for Player of the Year

Payet Skill

The Frenchman has been the star man for the Hammers this season.

Tony Cottee would be amazed if Dimitri Payet is not named on the shortlist for Player of the Year, he has told London 24.

The Frenchman has been in sensational form since joining from Marseille in the summer, with a series of impressive displays under his belt.

Even a long-term injury picked up at the end of November has failed to stop him, with him arguably performing better following that time out than before.

He was the star man last weekend as his superb free kick handed his side the lead against Manchester United as the two sides drew 1-1 in the FA Cup.

One man who has been impressed is former Hammer Cottee, who says he would be astounded if Payet is not on the shortlist for Player of the Year come the end of the campaign.

“Going back to that goal and Payet, I would be astonished if he was not on the short list for player of the year,” he told London 24.

“I think a couple of Leicester and Tottenham players may be there as well, but he stands alongside all of them after a stunning first season.”

For now, West Ham will just be hoping Payet can continue to be the star man for the rest of this season.

They certainly need him to be, as they chase down a potential place in the top four as well as FA Cup glory.

Their chances rest firmly on his performances continuing to be of the standard he has set, although at present, he appears to have no intentions of slowing down.
