Steven Pienaar braced for Everton exit

Pienaar Everton

HITC Sport understands South African has been disappointed not to be offered a new deal.

Steven Pienaar has been left shocked that Everton have not opened contract talks with him, HITC Sport understands.

The popular South African midfielder had a 2015 to forget managing just over an hour of action, thanks to knee and hamstring injuries.

But now fully fit, the 33-year-old was ready to sit around the table with The Toffees as he wanted to extend his stay which dates back to 2011.

Everton have handed deals to players well within their 30s in recent years with the likes of Leon Osman, Tony Hibbert and Tim Howard all signing deals despite reaching that landmark - but Pienaar looks unlikely to be given that chance.

He has been linked with a return to Germany and Holland, where he once featured for the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Ajax, whilst Celtic and Rangers are also believed to be keen.

But sources close to the player have confirmed that he would like to stay in the Premier League and believes he still has something offer at the highest level and it is understood a number of clubs have confirmed an interest in talking to him this summer on a free transfer.
