Liverpool need good start against Manchester United, admits Klopp

The two sides meet in the Europa League on Thursday.

Liverpool need a good start against Manchester United to ensure their progression, manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted to the club’s official website.

The two sides meet at Old Trafford on Thursday afternoon in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 encounters.

The Reds hold a 2-0 lead over their fierce rivals in the game, with goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino securing victory in the first leg at Anfield.

While they dominated that game, the 2-0 scoreline is still a dangerous one, and gives their opponents some hope of still being able to progress.

Klopp is more than aware of that, admitting that his side will need a good start to ensure they are the team that is in the draw for the next round.

“Louis van Gaal is a very experienced manager so he’ll have a plan, of course,” he told

“We have to take it and to switch it, that’s our thing. A good start in the game is important.”

“It’s not the most important thing, but we will try to play similarly or more intensive than we did at Anfield.”

The tie is certainly in a tricky place at this moment in time given how a goal from either side could swing it.

Were Manchester United to score first, that puts them right back in the tie and would surely provide them with the momentum to go and try to get another.

However, another from Liverpool effectively puts the game to bed as it would not only mean them being 3-0 up, but also having the cushion of an away goal.
