Rafa Benitez admits playing Papiss Cisse would be a risk for Newcastle United

Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has not played a match in 2016 so far.

Rafael Benitez has admitted to the Shields Gazette that throwing Papiss Cisse into his Newcastle United starting line-up would be a risk.

Cisse has recently returned to fitness, and there have been some calls for him to go straight back into Newcastle’s team, due to the side’s lack of goals.

However, Benitez has urged caution over using the Senegalese international, as he does not want the striker to be ruled out again.

“We now have Cisse coming back, but we will see in the training session,” Benitez said.

“To take a risk with a player who is not fully fit is difficult.

“But if he scores two or three goals in the training session, then we will have to change our mind.”

Cisse has not played in 2016, with his last appearance coming on 19th December against Aston Villa.

The 30-year-old has been powerless, as he has watched his side slip down the Premier League table.

Cisse has watched on as Newcastle have fallen into 19th place in the top flight, but he will be eager to prove his worth over the remainder of the campaign.

The front man has previously been prolific in England, and he could solve the Magpies' search for a potent forward.

So far this season, Cisse has scored two goals in 13 appearances.
