Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny not a great centre back, says Nicholas

The centre back has been labelled as the best in the Premier League this year.

Arsenal central defender Laurent Koscielny is not the great centre back that many make him out to be, Charlie Nicholas has told Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12pm March 12th.

The French defender has developed superbly since joining from Lorient as an unknown in 2010, becoming a key member of their defence.

Indeed, many believe he is among the best in the Premier League, with former stars Thierry Henry and Rio Ferdinand claiming as much this season.

Nicholas though, is not one who is impressed; instead saying the player highlights how much Arsene Wenger has failed to fill in the gaps at the club.

“As Arsenal fans it’s getting tougher and tougher,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“Everybody raves about Koscielny. He’s the best centre back at Arsenal but he’s not a great centre back in my opinion, he never has been.”

“I think that’s always been evident, he [Wenger] has not managed to fill in the gaps that Arsenal need filled in.”

While Nicholas suggests that Koscielny is not the great centre back, the stats actually suggest otherwise.

His side have conceded the third fewest goals in the Premier League this year, behind Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

They are also joint second in the number of clean sheets, emphasising how good they have been defensively in this campaign.

Koscielny has played a key part in his side achieving both of those, and he would be keen to point out both of those as an argument against Nicholas’.
