Report: Crystal Palace want Ajax's Mitchell Dijks, Newcastle keen after January snub

Crystal Palace have reportedly joined Leicester City and Newcastle United in the race to sign Mitchell Dijks from Ajax.

According to The Mirror, Ajax defender Mitchell Dijks is now a target for Crystal Palace, though Newcastle United and Leicester City remain keen.

Dijks, 23, joined Ajax from Volendam as a teenager back in 2009, but having made just eight first-team appearances for the Amsterdam side, he moved on to Willem II in 2014.

One great season with Willem led to Ajax re-signing Dijks, and the giant left back has now established himself as a first-choice player under Frank de Boer, with some superb performances this season.

However, much like Daley Blind, Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Siem de Jong have found in recent years, great performances for Ajax will trigger interest from rival clubs, and that seems to be the case for Dijks ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Mirror report that Crystal Palace have joined Leicester City in the race to sign Dijks at the end of the season, but Newcastle are also hoping to land him having failed with a January move for the player.

Palace have seen Pape Souare blow hot and cold at left back since arriving from Lille in January 2015, and manager Alan Pardew may now look to replace him by making a move for Dijks, whilst Newcastle have endured long-standing problems at left back, with Dijks a possible solution.

Factor in Champions League-bound Leicester City, and it's clear that this could be a fascinating race for Dijks' signature, who should have no shortage of options this summer. A tall, strong and surprisingly quick left back, Dijks can defend as well as attack, whilst his age also makes him appealing to clubs who are looking for not only an immediate left back option, but also one for the future.
