Ray Wilkins and David James give verdicts on Newcastle’s survival chances

St James Park

Newcastle United are fighting for survival in the Premier League at the moment.

Former Queens Park Rangers and Rangers midfielder Ray Wilkins said on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 2 on Sunday morning (broadcast from 11am, March 13) that Newcastle United will retain their Premier League status for next season.

“Yeah, I think they will,” said Wilkins when asked if Newcastle will stay up.

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa goalkeeper David James also shared Wilkins’s opinion about Newcastle’s survival chances.

"I think Newcastle will stay up,” added James on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 2 on Sunday morning (broadcast from 11am, March 13).

Wilkins and James gave their verdicts on Newcastle’s survival chances a day before the game against Leicester City.

As expected, the Magpies lost at the King Power Stadium on Monday evening, but it is doubtful that either Wilkins or James thought that Rafael Benitez’s side will win or even draw against Leicester.

Benitez is a very good manager and is great at organising defences, and that is what Newcastle need at the moment.

The Magpies have been poor defensively all season, and that will be key in determining if they stay up or go down.

Newcastle will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Sunderland at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.
