“No disrespect to Leicester but Everton have better players,” wrote Merson. “How many Leicester players would get in the Everton team? Not many.
“If you had £1m to bet on who would win the league next season you’d put it on Everton, not Leicester. They’re punching well below their weight.”
Merson does make a valid observation, as on paper Everton do have a squad that is better than stronger than Leicester's.
Romelu Lukaku is one of the best and most promising young strikers in the Premier League, while John Stones, Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley are players with huge potential.
The problem is that collectively Everton have been underperforming this season, while the Leicester players are doing much better.
True, the likes of Danny Drinkwater, Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton are not exactly great footballers, but this season they are playing the best they can.
Perhaps next season Everton will fare better than Leicester, but at the moment credit must be given to the Foxes.
Claudio Ranieri’s side could win the Premier League title this season, and if they do that, then it would be arguably the greatest achievement in English football history.
