Alan Shearer says these two clubs wouldn’t be happy with Newcastle’s Benitez appointment

Newcastle United, Sunderland and Norwich City are all in danger of getting relegated to the Championship.

Alan Shearer has explained on why Newcastle United appointing Rafael Benitez as their manager is a blow to Sunderland and Norwich City.

Newcastle, Sunderland and Norwich are all in danger of getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

With Aston Villa stuck to the foot of the table at the moment, it looks likely that two of the three aforementioned clubs will join them in the Championship in the 2016-17 campaign.

Newcastle legend Shearer believes that Sunderland and Norwich would have wanted Steve McClaren to remain in charge of the Magpies.

“From Sunderland and Norwich’s point of view, they would have been happy for the club to stick with what they had,” the former England international striker wrote on

“This will be a bit of a blow to them as it improves Newcastle’s chances of survival as he will make them tougher and harder to beat.”

Newcastle were doing badly under McClaren, and his replacement Benitez will hope to fare better.

The loss to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Monday evening should not affect the Spaniard much, as it was always on the cards.

Benitez is a very good manager, and he will be looking to make Newcastle defensively better in the coming weeks.
