Another young Aston Villa prospect deserves his chance this season.
While Aston Villa’s senior side continue to struggle in the Premier League, their next generation of players are doing their best to shatter the sense of impending doom that looms large over the club this season.
Villa’s under-21s ended their Arsenal counterparts’ seven-game unbeaten run earlier this week when they won 1-0 courtesy of a brilliant Jerell Sellars strike, and the 20-year-old deserves to follow Andre Green in earning his senior debut this season.
Green – who also played against Arsenal’s youngsters – came off the bench for Villa against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, and while he could not turn the game it was a sign that manager Remi Garde is going to give his young prospects more chances between now and the end of the campaign.
If that is the case, Sellars is surely near the head of the queue, with the 20-year-old scoring seven goals in 18 appearances for Villa’s under-21s this season.
Able to play as a centre forward, a secondary striker or a left winger, Sellars should be given the chance to impress where so many of his more experienced teammates have failed this season.
After all, next year he could be featuring regularly in the Championship and now is the time to blood him ahead of the challenges to come.
