Were Evans' harsh words regarding Botaka exactly what the Leeds winger needed to hear?

The Leeds United wide man has been impressing in training recently.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio Leeds, Steve Evans reserved special praise for summer signing Jordan Botaka, commenting on the winger’s recent efforts on the training field.

Speaking after Leeds United’s 2-1 victory against Blackburn Rovers, Evans said, “Jordan Botaka came on to the bench and rightfully so; he’s been fantastic in training.”

For those Leeds fans who remember previous comments from Evans regarding the DR Congo player, that is quite a turnaround.

After all, this is the player that Evans told the Yorkshire Post was not good enough for his first-team, even from the bench, after a string of below-par performances.

When a player is publically criticised they can react one of two ways: either they keep their head down and aim to make their manager eat his words or they sulk.

In the case of Botaka it seems he is taking the former, more sensible option, and that bodes well for his Elland Road career.

At just 22 the winger has plenty of time to reach his peak and he was always going to take time to settle at Leeds, and one wonders if Evans’ honesty regarding the player’s poor form has played a huge part in his improved attitude.

Leeds fans will certainly be hoping so, because if Botaka can add end product to his dazzling array of tricks, he could yet light up the club.
