Newcastle United take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium later this evening.
Benitez is set to take charge of the Magpies for the first time tonight at the King Power Stadium, when his side take on top of the table Leicester City.
The Spaniard has only had a limited amount of time to work with the squad, but Howey believes that he could make some alternations - and he expects Mitrovic to get the nod up-front.
“I think too many times in the past, Steve McClaren was getting into the team and telling them to keep things nice and tight, but the games were finishing after 15 minutes,” Howey said.
“He will be wanting to keep them nice and tight - and I think he’ll go with Mitrovic up front. That’ll be the focal point and he’ll try and get Perez in and around him.”
Mitrovic fell out of favour towards the end of Steve McClaren’s time in charge, with many of his appearances being as a substitute.
The Serbian was left on the bench for McClaren’s last game in charge, with McClaren controversially opting to start Emmanuel Riviere ahead of him.
Mitrovic has endured a difficult first campaign at St. James’ Park, where he has not scored particularly frequently.
The 21-year-old has found the back of the net just five times in 24 Premier League appearances, but Benitez will hope that the target man can find his groove as he looks to guide Newcastle out of the relegation zone.
