Slaven Bilic has told the Daily Mail that Dimitri Payet’s free-kick was no fluke against Manchester United yesterday, as his West Ham United backroom team informed him that the French international scored a similar set-piece during the warm-up before the game.
Payet curled in a free-kick from fully 30 yards in West Ham’s match against the Red Devils at Upton Park to fire Bilic’s side into the lead.
Although the Hammers were not able to hold on, with Anthony Martial firing in an equaliser late on, Payet’s wonder strike still dominated the headlines, with Bilic purring over the quality of the shot.
“My assistants told me that Payet scored a similar freekick in the warm-up. Make no mistake, it was pure class of magic,” the Croatian manager said.
Payet’s strike has only served to increase his reputation in England, with his debut season in the Premier League being nothing short of remarkable.
The former Marseille man only moved to Upton Park last summer, but he has taken no time to settle in.
Payet has scored 11 goals and created 10 assists in 29 appearances for West Ham this season, and he is regarded as one of the finest players in the Premier League.
Payet’s strong form has helped West Ham make a push for the top four, and he has quickly become a fans’ favourite at the London club.
