Nortey, 21, is a right-back but has recently been playing at left-back, in central defence and even in central midfield for the non-league side.
He was released by Chelsea two summers ago who he joined at under-15 level, and after getting injured at the end of his spell with the Premier League side then missed pre-season and a key chance to impress teams.
HITC Sport understands from sources close to the situation that Championship relegation battlers Rotherham United and Charlton Athletic are both monitoring Nortey, along with League One table toppers Burton Albion.
Nortey is not locked into a contract with Welling, keen to make himself as attractive as possible to Football League sides, and is available as a free signing, potentially helping in relegation and promotion battles.
Sheffield Wednesday had Nortey on trial previously, and the interest from Rotherham and Charlton is reflective of his positive performances for Welling, which has seen him rack up man-of-the-match awards even in his displays out of position.
