Could the Belgian stopper be on his way to Southampton this summer?
According to a report from Belgian website Sport.be, Southampton are monitoring Gent goalkeeper Matz Sels as they look to strengthen in that department ahead of next season, with the player said to be perfect for the English top flight.
Sels has featured 106 times for Gent to date, keeping 35 clean sheets in the process, and he has previously played 32 times for Lierse SK.
The latest report claims Southampton have scouted the player seven times already this season and that they see him as a viable option to act as back-up to Fraser Forster at St Mary’s in the years to come.
Sels has been an ever-present in the league for Gent this season and he has been on the losing side just four times in 30 matches to date.
Yet to earn a full cap for his country, Sels has featured four times for Belgium’s under-21 s and he has come through the ranks after initially starting at under-17 level.
While Southampton may well have an interest, their current back-up stopper Paulo Gazzaniga could have something to say about that.
