Gestede was handed a rare start for the Claret and Blues, but he was unable to inspire his side to a victory.
Villa were beaten 2-0 by Spurs, but Garde felt Gestede showcased his skills during the fixture.
“The options were today not too many,” Garde said. “But Rudy had a good game.
“He has some different skills that we tried to use. It was not too bad.”
Gestede was brought to Villa from Blackburn Rovers last summer, and he has struggled to make much of an impact at the Midlands club.
The target man has made just 11 Premier League starts to date, and he has only hit the back of the net six times in all competitions.
Gestede did have Villa’s best chance against Tottenham, but he hit his shot, from close range, against the crossbar.
The 27-year-old could keep his place in the team for the coming weeks, however, as Garde has suggested that Gabriel Agbonlahor has suffered a set back on his comeback from injury (Villa's official site).
