Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, March 12) that Newcastle United or Sunderland could win the Premier League title next season.
The former Southampton attacking midfielder argued that given what Leicester City are doing at the moment, Sunderland or Newcastle winning the title in the 2016-17 campaign is possible.
“Somebody like Leicester, who did what they have done after what happened last season, what’s to say that somebody like Sunderland or Newcastle, who’s down there at the moment couldn't do the same,” said Le Tissier. "I know it seems a bit far-fetched, but you would have said that 12 months ago when Leicester were in that position."
It is quite a bold comment from Le Tissier, given that Newcastle and Sunderland are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment.
True, Leicester are having a sensational campaign and could end up winning the league title, but it is a one-off.
Moreover, the top clubs are all underachieving this season. Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal are all underperforming at the moment.
What are the chances that all of them will struggle to play to their full potential next season?
