Can West Ham United break into the top four at the expense of Arsenal or Manchester City?
Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, March 12) that he would be shocked if West Ham United did not finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.
“West Ham are not far behind, now, they are not far behind,” said Merson. “They are a good, good football team, and they will be involved in this top four.
“I would be shocked if they don’t get in the top four. Arsenal, Man City, for me, are not sure things at the moment. Arsenal have got to go to West Ham, so if they lose to West Ham, they are level on points.”
West Ham are fifth in the Premier League table at the moment with 49 points from 29 matches.
The London outfit are just two points behind Manchester City, who are currently fourth in the standings and occupy the final playoff spot.
The Hammers are very much in the race for the top four, and there is a chance that they could end up in the Champions League places.
City’s recent performances and results have been disappointing, while Arsenal have also shown signs of slowing down.
If West Ham maintain their momentum and Dimitri Payet continues to play the way he has done this campaign, then Slaven Bilic’s side could find themselves in the Champions League next season.
