Newcastle United are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
Kieron Dyer said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (broadcast from 6am, March 11) that Newcastle United duo Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor are not bad players.
When fit, Coloccini and Taylor are the two first-choice central defenders at Newcastle.
Former Newcastle midfielder Dyer, though, does not think that Coloccini and Taylor are bad players.
“They (Coloccini and Taylor) are not terrible players,” said the former England international on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (broadcast from 6am, March 11) when asked about the two Newcastle centre-backs.
“When you are in the bottom of the league, you have got 52,000 people who can turn with any kind of mistake, it does knock your confidence.”
It is an interesting claim from Dyer, especially as Newcastle have been terribly poor defensively this season.
Coloccini is 34 years of age, and it is clear that he is past his prime. As for Taylor, the 30-year-old is not a great defender and has also had injury issues.
For Newcastle to progress in the coming years, they do need to sign better and younger central defenders.
The Magpies will take on Leicester City away from home at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League this evening.
