Generally, though, there wasn't much sympathy for the ex-Bolton and Palace boss on Sunday afternoon.
Many felt Forest were harsh to dismiss the 41-year-old but his tenure ended on a bad note with a 3-0 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Nottingham Forest sit 14th in the Championship as a result and look like they will wait until the summer before appointing a new manager.
As for Freedman, he received plenty of stick from Crystal Palace fans on Twitter, although some were more sympathetic.
Bolton supporters were much the same. Plenty criticised Freedman for his time at the club but a few felt he still did a better job than the current man in charge Neil Lennon...
Here's how Bolton and Crystal Palace fans reacted on Twitter as Freedman left Nottingham Forest:
Feel a bit sorry for Dougie Freedman was always fighting a losing battle at forest. proved at #cpfc he has what it takes to do well— Tony (@mazey16) March 13, 2016
Another job that hasn't worked out well for Freedman after chosing to leave #cpfc— Jamie Yates (@JamieYates89) March 13, 2016
Freedman built the squad and set all the foundations that have got us here under ridiculous financial difficulties. Deserves more respect— Mike (@CPFC__1905) March 13, 2016
It’ll always be an interesting debate but Freedman’s clear talent in the transfer market hides the fact he isn’t a great manager IMO. #cpfc— CPFC HQ (@CPFCHQ) March 13, 2016
Freedman gets sacked for winning 4 games in 2016 we've won 4 all season what does Lennon have to do to get sacked? #bwfc— JohnWarham (@Johnw_96) March 13, 2016
Neil Lennon a far far far worse manager than Dougie Freedman. #BWFC— RT33 (@RememberThe33) March 13, 2016
Freedman by far the worst manager we've had in a long time, Coyle, Lennon, Megson, Little Sam all not vgood but Freedman was terrible #bwfc— Owain (@OwainBarrington) March 13, 2016
We wouldn't have gone down this season if we'd have kept Freedman ... We'd have gone down last season. #BWFC— J.Σ (@jayeddyy) March 13, 2016
