Newcastle United lost 1-0 away at Leicester City this evening.
Rafael Benitez took charge of the Magpies for the first time this evening, having been appointed as manager on Friday afternoon, but it was always going to be a difficult task against title challenging Leicester.
Newcastle fell 1-0 down when Shinji Okazaki executed a superb overhead kick to put Leicester in front, and whilst the Magpies toiled away in search of an equaliser, the game ended 1-0 to pull Leicester five points clear at the top, and push Newcastle closer to the Championship.
Still one point adrift of safety after tonight's result, Newcastle need to pick up points quickly, but they looked much better under Benitez than they had in Steve McClaren's final game in charge, the 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth more than a week ago.
Ultimately, Newcastle were lacking the end product and couldn't find the net, meaning they have still scored only seven goals away from home in the Premier League this season - and Alan Shearer, a man no stranger to scoring goals for Newcastle, has offered his post-match verdict on Twitter.
Shearer admitted that it was another big win for Leicester as they pursue the title, and was impressed with the effort shown from Newcastle in their first match under Benitez, but knows that they have a huge problem in the final third, which is a massive concern in their fight against relegation.
