Former Manchester City player Trevor Sinclair feels Arsenal’s Gabriel Paulista is a liability after his error set Watford on their way to a 2-1 win over the Gunners in their FA Cup clash at the Emirates Stadium.
The Brazilian defender joined the Gunners in January 2015 from Villarreal and provided healthy competition to the regular centre-back partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
With the latter currently out injured, manager Arsene Wenger has not hesitated in bringing Gabriel in despite previously admitting his lack of English could cause potential problems in communication at the back.
Well, against Watford, it was not his English skills that let him and his team down but a distinct lack of basic defending as Odion Ighalo easily rolled him in the area before putting the Hornets 1-0 up.
Writing on Twitter during the game, Sinclair was not impressed with the defender’s contributions.
After escaping what looked like a poor challenge in the first half, and one which could have easily resulted in a red card, Gabriel’s afternoon did not get much better as his positional sense was all over the place.
Yet Watford’s opener really was something else. After Troy Deeney flicked on a routine throw-in, Gabriel allowed Ighalo to roll across him, opening up his body to fire in to the far corner from close range.
It was such basic defending, and Watford could not quite believe their luck when Adlene Guedioura crashed in an unstoppable second to put the Hornets on their way to the semi-finals.
