Sunderland are reportedly keen on Clement Chantome.

According to the Shields Gazette, Sunderland have been monitoring Bordeaux midfielder Clement Chantome.

The report claims that the Black Cats’ head of recruitment Martin Glover is overseeing summer transfer plans and the club are keen to delve into the French market starting with Chantome.

The Bordeaux star has been watched on a number of occasions by Sunderland and is out of contract this summer, handing the Wearside club the opportunity to bring him in on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old spent a number of years at Paris Saint-Germain before trading the French capital for Bordeaux, signing an 18-month contract with the club in January 2015.

Chantome has been a prominent figure for the club this season, starting 23 matches with a number of those alongside ex-teammate Wahbi Khazri who joined Sunderland in the January transfer window.

The former PSG man is versatile, playing in a number of midfield roles and even featuring at centre-back.

Sam Allardyce’s men are currently unsure of which league they will be playing in next season, yet regardless of their position it appears the club are seeking imports from France as a main transfer port.

Sunderland currently lie in 17th position in the Premier League table, ahead of Norwich City on goal-difference and one point clear of North East rivals Newcastle United who they face next weekend.
