Popular pundit Mark Lawrenson has suggested on BBC Radio Five Live that West Ham United’s current style reflects their manager while citing Dimitri Payet as one of the best play-makers in England this season.
Lawrenson, arguably unaware of his former predictions, has not made much of West Ham’s season thus far as he regularly tips them to lose while conducting his weekly forecasts for the BBC.
After being mocked by a number of the club’s supporters for getting it so wrong, the popular pundit went out of his way to praise both Bilic and Payet ahead of their FA Cup clash with Manchester United.
"West Ham can fight you. They are big, strong and athletic. They are very much like how their manager, Slaven Bilic, played;” the former Liverpool defender told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Dimitri Payet is one of the top five players in the country this season. He is one of those players that gets you off the seat."
Payet has scored eight goals and added a further seven assists in 22 Premier League matches this season, yet it is his ability with the ball and showmanship which has really caught the eye.
The France international has drawn comparisons with Paolo di Canio due to his flamboyant style, yet importantly he combines the tricks and flicks with a telling contribution in the final third.
With Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino joining Payet in impressing greatly, picking the season’s best play-maker makes for a tough proposition.
