Lineker reacts to Arsenal defeat on Twitter; highlights key weakness

Arsenal were defeated 2-1 by Watford this weekend in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

BBC pundit Gary Lineker has taken to social networking site Twitter in order to praise Watford for their FA Cup win over Arsenal and highlight the Gunners’ vulnerability to counter attacks.

Arsenal headed into the game knowing that the FA Cup could be their last chance of silverware this season, and they created enough decent first-half chances to win three games of football.

However, their lack of end product came back to haunt them as goals from Odion Ighalo and Adlene Geudioura put the Hornets firmly in the driving seat before Danny Welbeck could only manage a late consolation.

Writing on Twitter, Lineker praised Watford for their terrific effort but felt it was a familiar tale for Arsenal, lamenting their finishing and vulnerability to quick counter attacks.

With Leicester City eight points clear of Arsenal in the title race and Barcelona holding a commanding 2-0 lead in their Champions League tie, some could argue that the season is all but over for the Gunners.

With the players at their disposal and Arsenal’s regular challengers struggling, it has undoubtedly been a season of missed opportunities in North London and the pressure on Wenger is mounting.

Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Joel Campbell and Mohamed Elneny were all guilty of wasting chances against Watford but it was arguably their defending that was the biggest disappointment.

Francis Coquelin in midfield did not have a particularly good game, while the absence of Laurent Koscielny once again proved key as Gabriel Paulista struggled in his absence.
