Everton and Liverpool the neutral fans' favourites, says Paul Merson

The two sides have played excellent football this season, but it has not been good enough for the blue side of Merseyside.

Everton and Liverpool are the teams that the neutral fans support, Paul Merson has told Soccer Saturday, broadcast from 12pm on March 12.

The Toffees have been highly entertaining this season, arguably playing some of the most entertaining football in the Premier League under Roberto Martinez.

However, they find themselves 12th in the table in what has been a disappointing campaign.

Liverpool have fared somewhat better and impressed in periods since Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the helm.

And as far as Merson is concerned, they are the two teams that the neutral teams love most, but that is not good if you are an Everton fan.

“At the moment, every neutral who doesn’t support Liverpool loves watching Everton play,” he told Soccer Saturday.

“It’s entertaining, there’s goal at both ends, but that’s not good for an Everton fan. This team should be winning things.

“This team should be right up there because they’ve got good players. These should be a lot, lot higher than they are.”

The Blues will now be hoping they can at least win the FA Cup this season to ease some of the pressure building at Goodison Park.

They certainly have a strong chance of doing just that, having progressed to the semi finals with a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday evening.

Winning that, and ending their trophy drought in the process, would go some way to backing up the way Martinez has his team play and helping fans overlook another disappointing year in the league.
