Didier Deschamps offers West Ham star Payet Euro 2016 olive branch

Didier Deschamps

France boss Didier Deschamps could be set to end West Ham United star Dimitri Payet's international exile ahead of Euro 2016.

The former Juventus boss has excluded the Hammers hero from his France squads this season despite his fantastic debut campaign  in the Premier League.

Payet is rated one of the signings of the season by fans and pundits alike.

He has lit up the Premier League with 10 goals and 11 assists from 20 games, despite sitting out two months through injury.

Payet was named the London Player of the Year at an awards ceremony last week and that has further prompted questions over Deschamps' ego given the Reunion-born star's continued absence from French squads.

'I do not have only lambs'

Deschamps has previously insisted he wanted to see more from the playmaker after dropping him for the September internationals, and was quoted by the Get French Football News website as saying: "Dimitri is a quality player, who performs well for his clubs. He is good in a certain position and I am here to judge.

"For France, the demands are greater. Everyone deserves a shot in life. But I do not have only lambs, I have players with character.”

But now, speaking to respected French outlet L’Équipe, Deschamps seems to be softening to the idea of giving Payet a recall ahead of the country's home European Championships this summer.

“Dimitri has always been good with his club," Deschamps reiterated to L’Équipe.

"That was already the case at Marseille.

"For the national team, he made good entrances, he was good against Denmark, I do not forget that.

"It is not necessarily because there is huge competition that I will not pick him. And it is not necessarily because of a media campaign that I will pick him.”

Good news for France and West Ham

So there you have it, Payet could well get his chance to shine on the biggest stage of all this summer and that can only be good news for France and West Ham.

The Hammers have handed their best player a brand new long-term contract after his brilliant performances this season.Players of Payet's calibre should be playing for their countries and it could be dangerous if he feels he must move to increase his chances of international recognition.
