Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez sought advice from Alan Shearer.

Newly appointed Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has told The Guardian about the conversation he had with club legend Alan Shearer.

Earlier at the weekend, Rafael Benitez told The Shields Gazette that he spoke with club legend Alan Shearer before taking the job.

Now discussing their conversation, Benitez said that the record goalscorer was keen to offer any help or advice he may be able to impart.

Benitez explained: "Alan Shearer loves the club. He told me: ‘If you do well it will be amazing. If you need me or want to know anything, about the city, the fans, everything, you can always ask.’ He was great, he was really good."

Shearer has been an outspoken critic of both the Mike Ashley regime, and the football played under Steve McClaren.

His voice is prominently heard as a pundit on Match of the Day and columns he writes for various newspapers and websites.

Keeping him onside is not a bad move for the shrewd Benitez to make, and he is a manager whose track record deserves great respect before he is written off from the outside.

Newcastle face league leaders Leicester City this evening with the Spaniard hoping that his new team can pull off a shock result
