Sheffield Wednesday defeated Nottingham Forest 3-0.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Kieran Lee put in a superb performance as his side got their Championship playoff campaign back on track with a resounding 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

The Owls headed in to the game stuttering somewhat, going five games without a win including a surprising 1-0 home defeat to South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United at Hillsborough.

But against Forest they bounced back in style - Aiden McGready, Gary Hooper and Marco Matias grabbing the goals with the latter coming after the visitors were reduced to 10 men after Barry Bannan was sent-off.

McGeady, a January arrival from Everton, will no doubt grab the headlines following his contributions in the final third yet once again Wednesday’s unsung hero on the day was Kieran Lee.

As shown by the table provided by Opta, the midfielder put in an immense defensive display as he held Forest’s attacks at bay and didn’t allow the likes of Ryan Mendes or Ben Osbourne room to manoeuvre.

Lee posted an impressive three ball recoveries, seven tackles and 13 defensive duels won as he completely dominated the middle of the pitch, even after Bannan was shown a straight red card.

Moreover, the former Oldham Athletic man was completely reliable in possession, taking 76 touches and making 41 accurate passes as Wednesday looked to retain the ball once in the lead.

The victory establishes Carlos Carvalhal’s side in the top six and their day got even better as Derby County squandered a 3-0 lead at Rotherham United to draw 3-3 with only seven minutes remaining on the clock.
