Fabricio Coloccini is very pleased that the former Liverpool man is now in charge.
The Toon have been poor this season and are looking like falling into the relegation trap under McClaren and a change was certainly needed at the club.
One man who is looking forward to working under Benitez is Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini.
He was speaking to the official Newcastle United website today and made it clear that he is happy with Benitez's appointment:
"Now we have a great manager who has won a lot of things, who has a lot of experience, who has been in charge of very big teams like Real Madrid and Inter Milan, so I think he will help us.
"I think his career speaks for itself. It's exciting for us, and for the younger players as well because they can learn a lot from him.
"Hopefully we can understand the way he wants to play and try to win games, because the aim is to be in the Premier League next season.
"The next ten games will be massive because if we stay in the Premier League like we want to do, I think next season, with a manager with such big experience, it will be good."
The Argentine, who will be able to speak his mother tongue with his new boss, has not been having the best of seasons at St James' Park.
However under Benitez he will be hoping that his performances improve in the latter stafges of the campaign.
He will be tasked with leading the defence in the next few weeks, once he has recovered from his current groin injury.
The new Newcastle boss will demand that the current team improve defensively and Coloccini will be integral to that process.
Toon fans will therefore hope that the pair can forge a strong working relationship.
