Bacary Sagna has been impressed by West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet.

Manchester City right-back Bacary Sagna has sung the praises of West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet as he labels his French compatriot as a contender for the Player of the Year award, the Mirror reports.

Payet has been phenomenal for the Hammers in his debut season for the club, scoring and assisting an abundance of goals to fire his side to the cup of a place in the top four.

West Ham currently sit just behind City in the Premier League table, and Sagna pinpoints Payet has the man driving the East London club on and went as far as calling him a genius.

“He has been amazing. To me he is a contender to win the Player of the Year award. He is the one that has taken West Ham to the position where they are,” Sagna explained.

“He has been very decisive and they missed him badly when he was injured. They have other quality players but he makes a massive difference. He is a genius. He can score goals, he can assist quite easily and he has a big impact on the team. He brings that extra quality.”

Payet joined West Ham from Marseille in the summer in quite controversial circumstances, considering the French club at the time were in Europe while West Ham finished last season in the bottom half.

However, under Slaven Bilic’s guidance, the Hammers have took off this season and things could get even better for them in the coming weeks as they look to advance to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Payet, 28, is a serious contender for the Premier League’s Player of the Year award after posting a superb record of eight goals and a further seven assists in 22 league matches so far.
