The former Liverpool defender has revealed that he admires Van Gaal for giving chances to young players.
“One thing I admire about Van Gaal is he gives young players a chance,” Carragher told The Daily Mail. “But to come to Anfield and play those kids?
“If you play too many of them, it's asking for trouble. It is being too brave. Do you understand what I mean?”
Carragher made the comments about Van Gaal during a discussion with United legend Paul Scholes following the Europa League tie between Liverpool and the Red Devils on Thursday evening.
Liverpool won the first leg of the last-16 tie 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino.
Van Gaal included Guillermo Varela, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in the starting lineup.
The Dutchman has also given chances to Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Donald Love, Joe Riley, Regan Poole and Tim Fosu-Mensah this season.
United are sixth in the Premier League table at the moment with 47 points from 29 matches.
The Red Devils are three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
