Liverpool - Top 30 players - Number 19

He came through the ranks, captained the side to glory and even took care of first team affairs for a short while.

This man is certainly not an unfamiliar figure to the world of football today. Phil Thompson came through the ranks at Liverpool and would ultimately end up captaining his side to European Cup glory, and even had a spell as Caretaker manager.

He made his full debut for the Reds in 1972, which was the first of 477 appearances for the centre-back, and he managed to score 13 goals in the process. He may have started in midfield in the very first stages of his Anfield career but Bill Shankly would make him a centre-half before the Scot retired in 1974, and Thompson ended up becoming a crucial part of the successful Bob Paisley era as he formed an effective partnership alongside Emlyn Hughes.

In April 1979, Thompson would end up taking over the captaincy, the highlight of which saw him lift the club's third European Cup in Paris as the Reds overcame Real Madrid 1-0 in the Parc de Princes.

He would end up losing the captaincy in 1982 to Graeme Souness but would still play a pivotal role in the side, while his playing career with the Reds concluded in 1985 when he moved to Sheffield United on loan.

He won plenty of silverware as a player with the Reds including seven League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, two European Cups and two UEFA Cups.

Thompson would return to the club in a coaching capacity. First as reserve team coach in 1986 until 1993 and then as assistant manager to Gerard Houllier in 1998 until the end of the Frenchman's reign in 2004.

During his time as Houllier's number two, Liverpool won a famous cup treble in 2001, the League Cup in 2003 but the 2001/02 season saw Thompson take charge of first team affairs for much of the season after Houllier took ill at half-time during a 1-1 draw with Leeds United in October of that campaign.

He joined Sky Sports as pundit, where he continues to work to this day.
