Clive Allen asks important question of Spurs squad, makes claim about Aston Villa clash

Clive Allen claims Tottenham must beat Aston Villa on Sunday.

Former Tottenham striker Clive Allen has told BBC Radio Five Live that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur must beat Aston Villa on Sunday.

Spurs travelled to Germany on Thursday night, as they took on Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, but came back with a 3-0 thumping after a goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a brace from Marco Reus.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino came in for stern criticism during and after the game for his team selection, given that a host of key players were rested, whilst fringe players were handed starts at Signal Iduna Park.

Tottenham have no time to dwell on that thumping though, as their Premier League title challenge continues on Sunday with a trip to bottom club Aston Villa.

Spurs will be expected to win the game, but must be wary of slipping up after picking up just one point from games against West Ham United and Arsenal.

Now, former Spurs striker Clive Allen has told BBC Radio Five Live that, after such a huge defeat - their heaviest of the season - he questions just how Spurs will respond having not experienced a loss like that this season.

Allen also claims that, given how Pochettino fielded a rotated team, Tottenham must now beat Aston Villa and keep their Premier League title hopes alive on Sunday afternoon.

"I think it all comes down to the result that they achieve at Aston Villa now," said Allen. "They have to win. They have to win for their Premier League campaign. With the changes Mauricio Pochettino made, obviously everybody will reflect on that. It was the heaviest defeat they have suffered this season, at the hands of Dortmund."

"How will that affect the squad? Because the squad has been rotated, these players haven't experienced a defeat like this, so they have to bounce back and have to respond in the right way at Villa Park," he added.
