Ray Wilkins has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast programme on TalkSPORT that Nabil Bentaleb and Tottenham Hotspur have become the forgotten men at Tottenham Hotspur this season.
Bentaleb and Mason were revelations last season, as they enjoyed absolutely brilliant breakthrough years.
However, the pair have slipped down the pecking order and now play back-up roles at White Hart Lane.
The emergence of both Eric Dier and Dele Alli has rather overshadowed Bentaleb’s and Mason’s progress, and their route to the first team has also been blocked by Mousa Dembele’s excellent performances since being moved into a defensive midfield role.
Wilkins still believes that both Mason and Bentaleb are talents, but he says that they now have a point to prove.
"When Dier steps out, Bentaleb comes in with Mason," he said. "Last year, I thought these two were magnificent. But, all of a sudden, you get Dier and Alli come on the scene and these are forgotten guys, who have to prove a little bit."
Bentaleb recently asked to play for Tottenham’s under-21’s, due to his lack of senior action this season.
The Algerian international has played just 11 times this term, and only five of these appearances have come in the Premier League.
Mason, on the other hand, has featured slightly more regularly, but he has struggled to win back his starting place, after suffering with injury earlier in the campaign.
