Peter Schmeichel suggests Newcastle have made a mistake

Rafael Benitez has been appointed as the new Newcastle United manager.

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has suggested on social networking site Twitter that Rafael Benitez is not the right manager for Newcastle United.

Benitez was appointed the Newcastle manager earlier today following the dismissal of Steve McClaren.

Just before the Spaniard was announced as the Magpies’ boss, former United goalkeeper Schmeichel suggested on Twitter that the Premier League outfit should appoint Nigel Pearson.

Pearson has experience of dealing with clubs fighting for survival in the Premier League.

The Englishman would have a good appointment for Newcastle, but so could Benitez.

The Spaniard is used to working with top players and at top clubs, and taking the Magpies out of their current mess will be a massive challenge.

Newcastle are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment and are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

The Magpies will return to action on Monday evening when they take on Leicester City away from home at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League.
