Marseille coach criticises Steven Fletcher performance, suggests Newcastle United loanee may bump him out of starting XI

Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin may see him out of the side.

It certainly was a shock transfer on deadline day - as Scotland international Steven Fletcher headed to Marseille on loan from Sunderland.

The shock move came about as it was made clear to Fletcher he was set to become a fringe player under the management of Sam Allardyce.

With his contract up in the summer he wanted out and he is now trying to earn himself a future with Marseille during his loan stint.

But it looks like he might be about to lose his place in the first-team, to a Newcastle United owned player.

Marseille drew with Ajaccio in midweek. Fletcher, who scored last weekend against Toulouse, was poor in the game and is struggling to put together a meaningful relationship with Michy Batshuayi up top.

With that in mind Marseille boss Michel has confirmed that Newcastle loanee Remy Cabella may start in a number ten role v Lorient tomorrow - telling Le Phoceen:

"Cabella, he is an option playing at 10.

"With Batshuayi or Fletcher with Cabella it worked well.

"Fletcher-Batshuayi, I am not satisfied with the performance they had in Ajaccio."

They are unlikely to drop Batshuayi, so Fletcher may be back on the bench this weekend. To make matters worse another Newcastle loanee will likely take Cabella's place on the wing, with Florian Thauvin likely to start.

So it seems Fletcher's attempts at impressing away from Sunderland are being hampered by the efforts of two Newcastle United owned players.
