Manchester United fans react on Twitter to Anthony Martial performance

The United striker was more or less invisible for 90 minutes at Anfield.

Anthony Martial's first goal in English football might have come against Liverpool, but the young French striker never really looked like hurting the Reds again tonight.

The 20-year-old spearheaded the Red Devils' attack in this evening's 2-0 Europa League defeat at Anfield to little effect, with the exception of one or two promising moments.

When the team sheets were released, it was thought that Martial would play on the wing, allowing man of the moment Marcus Rashford another shot at leading the line, though it was the academy prospect who ended up on the flank.

Overall, United's £36 million man did not look like a player with such a pricetag in tonight's first leg of the last 16, and the club's supporters were quick to point out his shortcomings on the night.

It remains to be seen if Louis van Gaal sticks with the youngster for next week's return leg at Old Trafford, though United have given themselves a sizeable task in order to progress.

A Daniel Sturridge penalty on 20 minutes, coupled with a Roberto Firmino second with 17 minutes to play, has made Jurgen Klopp's side huge favourites to progress into the quarters.
