Joey Barton offers his opinion on Newcastle’s Rafael Benitez appointment

Rafael Benitez has been appointed the new Newcastle United manager.

Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has told talkSPORT that making the managerial change has given Newcastle United a chance of retaining their Premier League status for next season.

Newcastle dismissed Steve McClaren as their head coach earlier today and replaced him with Rafael Benitez.

Benitez knows the Premier League inside out, having been in charge of Liverpool and Chelsea before.

The Spaniard was recently the coach at Real Madrid, and many will suggest that he will find it tough at Newcastle.

Former Newcastle midfielder Barton seems to be of a similar opinion, but he believes that making the managerial change does give the Magpies a chance of staving off relegation to the Championship.

“If they didn’t change manager it was certainly looking very difficult for them to get out of the relegation zone,” Barton told talkSPORT. “They looked like a team slowly walking into the Championship.

“This gives them a chance in my opinion, the opportunity to turn it around. I don’t know what he can do really.

“He’ll get them more organised, he’s obviously a high-level coach with the teams he’s managed over the years.”

Newcastle are second in the Premier League table at the moment and are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.

The Magpies’ performances and results have been disappointing all season, and fans will hope that Benitez makes an immediate impact.

Newcastle will take on Leicester City away from home in the Premier League on Monday evening.
