HITC Sport understands that Spaniard did tell squad he would be leaving.
Middlesbrough sources insist that Aitor Karanka remains their head coach, following reports the Spanish coach walked out of the club on Friday.
HITC Sport has been told that Karanka held meetings at their Rockliffe Park training HQ, but then he is understood to have walked out, telling his squad he was leaving - but the club have played this down.
Despite Boro being the long-term favourites for promotion, rumours have beset the squad for much of the season about sections of disharmony.
Karanka fell out with star winger Albert Adomah in August, which even led to the Ghana winger handing in a transfer request, whilst he has also rowed with Stewart Downing - who he has dropped on more than one occasion this season, as well as other leading members of the squad.
But now with Boro registering just five wins from their 12 games in 2016, cracks are beginning to show at The Riverside and rumours began emanating on Friday that the Basque tactician had decided to call it a day.
However, the club have insisted that Karanka remains their head coach and anything suggesting otherwise was no more than a 'rumour'.
HITC Sport understands that the squad are due to have a meeting at the training ground on Saturday before they travel to London ahead of their televised clash with Charlton Athletic on Sunday.
Earlier this week Karanka even played down reports linking him with a switch to La Liga giants Valencia.
