Hutchison said: “If I offered you two teams at the start of the season, and it was Leicester and Newcastle, and said ‘which one is going to finish higher?’, you might look at them and think it’s going to be a close call. But I’d probably take Newcastle’s group of players. What they haven’t got is the mentality of the Leicester players.”
Hutchison’s comments suggest that the Magpies have a better squad on paper than Leicester, as at the start of the season many would have believed Newcastle would have finished higher than the Foxes.
On a player-by-player comparison, Newcastle certainly have more established names in their team, and it is not that bold of a statement.
However, since the league has started, it is clear that Newcastle are lacking the mentality and spirit to build a successful team.
This is were Leicester have excelled this term, as their team spirit has built them into a fantastic unit, who have blown away all opposition to lead the Premier League by five points.
They are a squad of few stars, but as a team, no one functions better than Claudio Ranieri’s men in the entire division.
The strength of Newcastle’s squad really emphasises how poor the Magpies have been this season, and they are likely to be the best ever group of players relegated from the Premier League.
