Craig Burley doubts Rafa Benitez will be able to work under Mike Ashley

Newcastle look set to appoint Rafa Benitez as head coach.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Craig Burley has suggested that Rafa Benitez will not be able to work under Mike Ashley at Newcastle United, if the Spaniard is appointed manager.

Burley said: “I don’t know if Rafa Benitez will be able to work with the owner Mike Ashley. He has been difficult. He has not run that club well and the supporters despise him. He brings managers in, he fires them, he brings them in, he fires them. He gives some [managers] money, he gives some none. There’s no shape, there’s on balance, there’s no sense as to what is happening at Newcastle.”

It seems highly probable that Benitez will be named head coach of the Magpies in the coming days, with Steve McClaren set to lose his job after a disastrous Premier League campaign.

The Tyneside club sit second bottom in the table, and on current form, they are heading out of the top flight.

A change is needed, and Benitez is in advanced talks with the Magpies to take over in an attempt to keep them in the Premier League.

However, Burley doubts whether he will be able to work under Mike Ashley, the man who has run Newcastle into the ground over recent years.

There is no stability in the running of the club, and this has seeped into the management of the playing squad, and whoever is named head coach needs to work with no sense as to how the club is being run.

Benitez looks willing to take the job at St James’ Park, but he should be well aware of what he is walking into before accepting the move.
