Another blunder? Newcastle-linked Thomas Tuchel now storming Europe... instead club chose Steve McClaren

The Borussia Dortmund boss could have taken over at Newcastle...

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United could have made a move for Thomas Tuchel before they appointed Steve McClaren.

Their report (in April 2015) stated that Tuchel would have been open to taking over at St James' Park but that the club themselves didn't want to appoint someone until the summer...

Since, Tuchel has taken over at Borussia Dortmund, who are second in the Bundesliga and now storming Europe, beating Tottenham 3-0 on Thursday to rightly make them favourites for the Europa League.

Naturally, Newcastle may not have been able to attract Tuchel with Dortmund in the frame. But that doesn't necessarily make sense. If the German was open to joining the Magpies but the club unwilling to offer him the job at that specific moment, that means the ball was very much in Newcastle's court. What's more, the current Rafael Benitez talk shows the club are still a draw for reputable European coaches.

They chose not to go for Tuchel.

And look at the German now - compared to McClaren, the man Newcastle went out of their way to appoint after he had reportedly initially rejected them (according to the Daily Mirror) and was then sacked at Derby.

You just couldn't make this stuff up...
