Stoke reportedly interested in signing left-back Caner Erkin this summer

Could the experienced Turkey international be on his way to Stoke City for free?

According to a report from the Stoke Sentinel, Stoke City have been linked with a summer move for Fenerbahce defender Caner Erkin.

The 27-year-old left-back has featured 210 times for the Turkish club to date, scoring 16 goals and providing a very impressive 48 assists in the process.

However, this season Erkin has been in and out of the side – in part due to suspension and minor injuries – and with his contract coming to an end in the summer it seems he will be moving on as a free agent.

The Sentinel seems slightly wary of the suggestion that Erkin could be heading to the Britannia Stadium, feeling there may be an attempt to earn a new contract at his current club. But with time running out for an offer to be made, it would be no great surprise if Erkin moved on at the end of the season.

He would certainly offer experience, quality and additional creativity to this ever-improving Stoke side and he is the kind of player manager Mark Hughes would no doubt go for.

But this is one to take with a slight pinch of salt even if there could be work going on behind the scenes to secure what would be an impressive free transfer.
