The Claret and Blues appear destined to be relegated, after winning just three of their first 28 Premier League matches.
Villa are currently nine points adrift of safety, and their recent performances have suggested that the squad are resigned to their fate.
Villa have collapsed to heavy defeats against Manchester City and Liverpool of late.
And Campbell said: “It’s sad to see what’s happening at Villa Park. They’re such a big club and to be rooted to the foot of the table without so much as a whimper is criminal.”
Villa have never before been relegated from the Premier League, but their proud record looks set to be ended this term.
Neither Tim Sherwood or Remi Garde have been able to inspire Villa’s players, and they have endured a disastrous campaign.
The Midlands side are already planning for next season, with the Telegraph suggesting that a mass exodus could occur. With relegation looming, Villa simply cannot afford to fund their current squad’s wages.
Garde is also believed to be considering his future (Daily Mail), with major changes set to occur in the summer.
