According to the Daily Mail, Rafael Benitez has already discussed Newcastle United’s transfer budget in the summer during his initial meetings with manager director Lee Charnley.
Benitez has been placed at the top of Newcastle’s wishlist, as they look to find a replacement for Steve McClaren.
At the moment the former England boss remains in charge, but his position is now practically untenable.
HITC broke the news that Newcastle had made an approach for Benitez, and it seems that the Spaniard is now eyeing up the job on a long-term basis.
It was initially thought that Benitez could have been brought in just to keep the Tynesiders up, but he reportedly wants the job for the years ahead.
The ex-Real Madrid manager realises that he will need to make major changes if he is able to keep Newcastle in the Premier League, though, and he is already discussing how much money he will have to spend to renovate the squad.
Newcastle are currently in 19th place in the Premier League table, with their next fixture coming against Leicester City on Monday evening.
