Ray Wilkins has told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT that he disagrees with Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to rest Eric Dier for Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Borussia Dortmund later this evening.
Dier has been left at home, while his Spurs teammates have travelled to Germany, as Pochettino wants to give the defensive midfielder a rest.
But Wilkins feels that the Argentine boss is making an error in keeping the 22-year-old out of such an important fixture.
“I know they are going on a lot of fronts, but I think Dier has been outstanding,” Wilkins said. “Okay, they’re bringing in Bentaleb and Mason, but Dier just slots back into that centre back situation so comfortably. I would have played him all day long here.”
Dier has played a key role for Tottenham this season, after being brought into a defensive midfield role.
His discipline and combativeness have made him one of the first names on the team sheet at White Hart Lane, and the fact he has been rested highlights his importance to Pochettino’s side.
Tottenham are still aiming to win the Premier League title, and they have a match against Aston Villa on Sunday to play.
Despite Dier’s omission, Spurs are still likely to name a strong line up in Germany later this evening, as Pochettino has made winning the Europa League one of his priorities this term.
